This picture was taken during the construction of the road Vathi, Karlovasi Carriage-Way in the wild cliffs of Kourou-Dere (in Turkish language, “Dry Stream” in English, it is a coastal area between Saint Konstantinos and Karlovasi).
In April 1899, following an open competition (auction), the engineering company “Rivabella and Gounarakis”, under the auspices of the Italian engineer Joseph Rivabella, begun the construction of the road complex of Samos Island for the sum of 691.500 gold Francs.
The construction was divided into three sections: Vathi-Karlovassi, Karlovassi-Chora and Karlovasi-Marathokampos. The workers and the craftsmen where all Samians, except the foremen, the machinery operators and the masters.
