A Travelogue to Konteika Village (Photos)

We organized a travelogue to Konteika village and took many photos of this beautiful village.

Kodaika (or Konteika) is located in the north-western Samos, in an altitude of 326 meters. It is some 7 km south-west of Karlovasi and south of Ydrousa.

The village is built on the north-west side of Karvouni Mountain. It is surrounded by hills covered with vineyards, pines, and cypresses. It cannot be seen from the coast, i.e. it was completely protected, in the past, by pirates and outlaws.

The area is green and of outstanding natural beauty. The village was named after its first settler, a shepherd called Konstantinos Kontos from Platanos, who settled there in 1750. The main attraction of the village is the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dates back to the 19th century. The church celebrated on 8 September.

The beautiful main square of the village is an example of traditional island architecture. According to the 2011 Census, permanent population is 350 people (the 20th most populated municipality of Samos).

Most of the villagers are farmers and cultivate vines and olives, while in the past the main product of the village was tobacco.
