Lekka

Lekka is located north of Karlovassi and at a distance of about 3 kilometers from it.

According to legend, the first inhabitant was an Albanian named Lekas. In order to escape from the pursuit of the Turks, he fled Peloponnesus, along with others, and came to Samos. The village Lekka is very pleasant because from the one side one can view the Valley of Karlovassi and from the other the blue sea.

The inhabitants of this village stand out for their characteristic intelligence, their wit and their love of teasing others. This is why the name Lekatis (from Lekka) has become synonymous with cynical and sarcastic. Thus, the well known witty remarks are known as “Lekatika

Near Lekka are the small settlements Tsourlei, Mouria and Sourides.

In the area of Tsourlei, next to the torrent that the ancients called Kerkitio, was the old church called “Panagia tou Potamou” (Holy Mother of the river).

Tourneforte reports that in this area, four marvelous marble columns, which were remains of the temple of “Haridotis Hermes”, are preserved.

In the photo, the three-roofed basilica Ioannou tou Prodromou stands out and lower down, the chapel Agias Sotiros. In 1902 Lekka had 1099 inhabitants.
