Kontakeika

Kontakeika or more correctly Kotakeika is located a few kilometers from Karlovassi o­n a beautiful hill 150 meters from the sea. According to legend, in 1750, a man named Georgios Kotis came from the island Kos and purchased land in this area for cultivation. His sons later married women from the nearby village Fourni (Hydroussa), built homes and became the first inhabitants of the village.

West of Kontakeika and at a height of 950 meters, rises the foothill Kastrovouni, o­n the peak of which there are ancient reservoirs and ruins whish provide evidence that there was o­nce a fort there.
In this area an anaglyph, depicting a man and a woman seated o­n stools opposite a tripod, was also found.
In 1902 there were 1274 residents, almost all of whom were farmers.
It is worth visit it because it has beautiful view, traditional paths  and low-priced taverns for very nice food. In the village belong the settlements of Agios Dimitrios and Agios Nikolaos. The port of Agios Nikolaos is one of the most beautiful locations on the island and in the past few years is being developed touristy with many hotels and restaurants.
The biggest social events of the village are the festivals which are organized for the churches and the chapels of the area.
