Kokkari

Kokkari, 10 km. west of the city of Samos and with a population of 894 inhabitants, is one of the most beautiful fishing villages on the island, with a very developed tourist infrastructure.
In various old documents Kokkari is listed as Krokari. Its name came from the onions that were previously produced in the region in great abundance.
In 1902 had 1291 inhabitants, who were engaged at that time with the cultivation of grapes and olives. Formerly Kokkari was famous for its raisins and the sweet zucchini which people calls them “lires”. For this reason the Samians used as saying the phrase “would you like a lire from Kokkari?” for those of course who complain that they don’t have any money.
Today Kokkari, due to its location, attracts thousands of tourists every year. Usually, it is being preferred by many foreign tourists and especially athletes and surfers (wind surfing). There are a lot of taverns, restaurants, bars, hotels and rooms to let. The narrow streets on the central section of the village remind of cycladic island.

The variety of the buildings, with the plethora of colors and the variations of the architectural type of the housing flats with tiles, creates a pleasant visual contrast with the blue of the sky and of the sea.

The community’s inhabitants are hospitable and anyone can see them in the evenings sitting on the landings of their houses telling stories of the old era, when their fishing village was small and insignificant. Many of them will even invite strangers into their homes and offer to them some coffee or a traditional sweet that they handmade it.
