Autumn Travelogue to Kosmadei Village

Following the travelogue in Kakoperato gorge (click HERE for details) we visited Kosmadei, a small village in the foot of Mount Kerkis. Currently the village has some 90 inhabitants and is located 12 km away from Karlovassi.

Kosmadei was named after its first resident, Kosmas Kastaniotis, who came from Kastania village.

The road, pass Leka village, turns west and, passing through dense vegetation and the village of Nikoloudes, leads to Kosmadei. While driving you need to be very careful because the road has many turns and is quite steep, because Kosmadei is located at an altitude of 670 meters, the third “highest” village of Samos.

At the entrance of the village you’ll find the central square and, pass the square, you’ll see a big church.

In Kosmadei we were impressed by the traditional tavern “St’ Antonakak” where we tasted fantastic traditional dishes and enjoyed all the professionalism and services offered by the owners!

We arrived quite early so the people were not … hungry yet. Thus we had the opportunity to know each other better, to chat and to understand how it is possible the love of some people for what they do can turn a tavern into a successful business in a village with just 90 inhabitants, and how they manage to create a tavern worthy to be visited by all!

Once we sat at the table, we were offered the local Vrastari drink. It is prepared as follows: Boil flaskouni herb, then add red pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, orange peel and other herbs. Add sugar, mix it up and is ready. It is served hot or cold depending on the season.

All foods are delicious and traditionally made by the owners themselves. We preferred rooster cooked in wine, paspala, handmade cheese-pies and salad with local goat cheese and hamades. Delicious … all of it! And of course souma drink, light and flavored…

We strongly recommend “St’ Antonakak” tavern!

From any part of Samos you may start, it’s worth the trip if you are to taste the delicious dishes offered by the tavern. If you want to be sure, call for reservation and pre-order the dishes you wish. The phone number is 2273079400. For technology addicted customers the tavern features Wi-Fi!
